Join us with our Great Eggcase Hunt Project!
Have you ever wondered what these leather-like shapes are that you can find along our shore? These are eggcases (mermaid purses) from babysharks, skates and rays. Sharks, skates and rays reside in these cases untill they are old enough to take care of themselves.
There are fiftheen species of sharks, skates and rays that live in the Dutch North Sea. Along our shore you can find eggcases of eight species of sharks and two species of rays. Five species of sharks and rays are
ovoviviparous or viviparous what means they are live bearing and do not lay eggs.
It is worth the effort to take a look!
